Cert key size or handshake issue

Perhaps IE9 is configured to require a longer key in the SSL cert than you are providing. Was there an option to look at the cert details instead of just proceeding to the site?

The other possibility could be in the cipher strengths supported. If IE is requiring stronger ciphers than your server is configured for, the handshake would fails.
